Italian Fl. 1870 - 1890
After the Ball

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1885
Image size: 24 ¾ x 33 ½ inches (63 x 85 cm)
Contemporary gilt frame

The man seated has just arrived home after an intoxicating time at the Venetian ball in Venice. One child looks at her father from the bed while another new born lays swaddled in her mothers arms.

While he has been out having fun the mother has been sewing and caring for the children, she looks at the viewer without humour. He has also managed to knock over the pot of hot ash, but stares at his mask with amusement. It is a beautifully painted picture with so much happening.
