David Roberts’ journal, Nov 23 1838: ‘To draw the pronaos I was obliged to sit in the sun protected only by a sunshade and the temperature reached 98 degrees in the shade today. I fear I did not make a very good job of it, but this collonade is so lovely, I could not resist it.’
The pronaos of the Temple of Edfu, filled with sand so that the eye rests on the column capitals, which are shaped like lotus flowers and palm fronds.
