This striking portrait dates to around 1620. The sash that the sitter wears around his chest, the gorget around his neck and the ornate sword by his side, probably refer to his appointment as a Captain or Officer of the English Army.

The wealth of the sitter is vibrantly captured through the sitter’s resplendent costume. He wears a fine ruff, and his doublet is abundantly embroidered with plants and birds in expensive gold thread.
