Throughout the 1920s Carey Morgan travelled widely around parts of central and southern Africa, and the surrounding regions. The collection of pastel and watercolour pictures in this exhibition were created during these travels.
By 1914 European Imperial powers had fully colonised the African continent with Britain having seized control over vast swathes of southern, eastern and western Africa by 1920. Carey Morgan joyfully depicts the British colonies of Transvaal, Nyasaland and the Seychelles as well as Portuguese Mozambique.
