This 17th century Dutch genre painting depicts a young woman holding a jug with a landscape leading on beyond. The RKD database lists another version of Toussaint’s work, today in the possession of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin.
Toussaint Gelton
Nothing is known with certainty about the place of birth and origins of Gelton. Though he was registered in the painters’ guild of Amsterdam from 1655 to 1661 and in that of The Hague from 1656 to 1661, his name suggests that he hailed from a French instead of a Dutch family. He was likely the son of Johannes Gelton and Adewina Weijn and the brother of merchant Arnoldus Gelton. Toussaint lived in Stockholm with Maria Dijckmans (daughter of The Hague painter Zacharias Dijckmans).
