Alfred Kingsley Lawrence
Alfred Kingsley Lawrence (1893-1975) was a figure painted in painter in oils, pastels and watercolours. Lawrence often favoured historical and allegorical subjects with literary or classical themes. Fashionable also as a portrait and a mural painter, he occasionally painted landscapes.
Born in Lewes, Sussex, the son of a solicitor, he studied at King Edward VII School of Art, Newcastle upon Tyne, before serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers during the First World War. Resuming his studies at the RCA Lawrence won a travelling scholarship in 1922 to attend the British School in Rome. He won the Prix de Rome in 1923.
On his return to England Lawrence painted murals for the new Bank of England in 1932. Exhibiting in London and abroad, he showed at the RA from 1929, was elected RA in 1938 and RP in 1947. A memorial exhibition was held at the Mall Galleries in 1976.
