In this painting, Woollatt captures Bruges Madonna ca.1505 from the Royal Academy collections. The stoic stone sculpture is depicted in a cold yet intimate composition, featuring the Madonna and child. Woollatt masterfully pronounces every crease and fold of her dress, capturing the sculpture's exact likeness. The work emphasises the neutral, cool tones and meticulously details both the sculpture and the surrounding room, transporting us into the Royal Academy.
