This painting by Thomas Mellish depicts a fifty gun ship and its fellow ship both flying red ensigns, also known as the ‘Red Duster’. The red ensign, a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner, symbolises the ship’s registration under the United Kingdom or its territories. This flag has a long history, dating back to the 17th century, when it was used by the Royal Navy. Only later was it adopted by merchant ships.
On the larger vessel the crew are depicted diligently working on deck while two small crafts govern the waves nearby. Beyond, other ships dot the scene, and land is visible in the distance.
Thomas Mellish
Mellish exhibited a pair of sea pieces at the Society of Artists in 1761 and later went on to present a moonlight scene in 1763. In 1766 he exhibited a moonlight view with ships and a view of Dover with ships, from an address in Hoxton Square in London. The most recent known painting by Mellish date back to 1778.
Some of Mellish’s paintings were also featured in an exhibition devoted to Samuel Scott a few years ago.
