Winifred Rymer (fl. 1929 - 1936)
Little is known about the artist Winifred Anne Rymer, other than that her career flourished between
1929 and 1936 and that she lived in the United Kingdom. She was part of a number of British
women artists whose works bridged the gap between realism and interwar modernism, driving the
transition of British art away from Edwardian tradition towards modern progressive aesthetics.
Despite this lack of biographical information, there is no doubt that this is a carefully considered
and technically accomplished study of a female nude. The figure is set against a red curtain
backdrop, half turning away from the viewer, her face in profile. Rymer has accurately rendered the
model’s body, detailing its contours and tones. She has left the hands and backdrop less detailed
and finished, focusing attention on the body itself.
