The Beech Trees
Oil on board
Image size: 11 ¾ x 9 inches (30 x 22.9 cm)
Contemporary-style handmade frame
This charming painting depicts a shaded area under two large Beech trees. Although the trees themselves are verdant and boast full branches of leaves, there are hints of a turn in season - orange and brown leaves litter the floor, and a few leaves are threatening to turn yellow. The artist of this work has chosen to depict this iconic time of year in a scene that feels truly reflective of rural British culture.
The thicker brushstrokes give the painting as feeling of spontaneity, and the sense that it was painted en plein air. The artist has masterfully captured the light levels of the forest floor, depicting intense shade at the base of the trees in comparison to lighter patches where the sun's rays are filtering down to the floor. The darker and deeper tones of the image also serve to accentuate the levels of light and pay testament to a skilled observational painter.
