The Daily Mail has long been noted for its foreign reporting and was one of the first British papers to popularise its coverage to appeal to a mass readership. By 1902, its circulation exceeded one million, rivalling the New York World and the New York Journal for the top circulating newspapers.

In the first half of the 20th century international travel became increasingly popular due to developing travel links and general affordability. Newspapers such as The Daily Mail advertised their foreign editions to holidaymakers, assuring them that they would not miss out on the news while they were away.

This original design for the advertisement is certainly striking. The Daily Mail's international success can be seen here literally, as numerous newspapers are shown to cover the countries of the globe. In the rear sits the machinery of the newspaper's printing press, constructed from a maze of cogs and rollers.
